International Short Film Day Is Celebrated 8–21 December 2025
Short Film Day will be celebrated in Finland for the 13th time around the shortest day of the year, on 21 December, as well as during the two weeks leading up to it. The idea behind this international event, originally from France, is that anyone can organise their own short film screening using their own devices, wherever they like – for example in schools, kindergartens, libraries or on their own sofa – and Short Film Day provides the films free of charge!
This year, five film packages are available. As usual, there are dedicated packages for children and young people, and the youth package also includes free learning materials (in Finnish) that can be used, for example, in lower secondary or upper secondary school lessons. In addition, for the third time, there is an Open Screen package, for which an open call was held in October 2025.
The following film packages will be available this year:
- Finnish Film Foundation: Lyhyesti sateenkaaren alla | Briefly Under the Rainbow
- Love & Anarchy – Helsinki International Film Festival: Lähekkäin | Side by Side
- Oulu International Children’s and Youth Film Festival: Lyhytelokuvia lapsille | Short Films for Children
- IhmeFilmi ry: Tää tuntuu joltain | This Feels Like Something (+ learning material)
- Short Film Day presents: Avoimen Open Screen -kategorian parhaat | The Best of the Open Screen Category
Registration for organising a pop-up event is open until 20 December 2025. Events can be organised privately or open to all – public events are listed on the Finnish Short Film Day website (the page is updated as new events are registered).
We welcome everyone to join the celebration of Short Film Day from 8 to 21 December 2025 by organising their own short film screening or by participating in public events around Finland!
Finnish Short Film Day is organised by Tampere Film Festival, Yle (Finnish Broadcasting Company), Finnish Film Foundation, Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy, Turku Animated Film Festival, IhmeFilmi, Oulu International Children’s and Youth Film Festival, and Azh Boyzz. The project is funded by the Finnish Film Foundation.
