This year’s Tampere Film Festival presents a remarkable showcase of 16 diverse Mongolian short films, offering an immersive glimpse into the dynamic and evolving landscape of Mongolian cinema. Curated by KITE Mongolia, a social enterprise dedicated to fostering creative youth and social innovators, this carefully selected program celebrates both established filmmakers and emerging voices shaping Mongolia’s cinematic future.

The program commences with Passion, an award-winning film by Byamba Sakhya that delves into the intricate relationship between artists and Mongolia’s post-socialist political transformation. Through its nuanced storytelling and evocative cinematography, the film sets the stage for an enthralling cinematic journey.

The lineup continues with Mongolia 2: Society Through the Eyes of Youth, a compelling selection of films that reflect Mongolia’s contemporary social realities: Inspiring movies, Stairs by Zoljargal Purevdash and The Dancer by Nomin Gantulga, sensitively portray social challenges. Urbanization by Zulaa Urchuud explores the stark contrasts between Mongolia’s rapid urban expansion and its deeply rooted nomadic traditions. Based on a true story, The Wonderful Flight by Bat-Amgalan Lkhagvajav takes viewers on a thrilling journey of two young brothers with an unexpected turn of events. The Lads by Galsandorj Tsagaandorj offers a poignant reflection on Mongolia’s shifting societal norms.

Mongolia 3: Society and Culture brings to life Mongolia’s rich cultural heritage and evolving social landscape: Melody for the Camel provides an intimate glimpse into traditional nomadic life. Lady of the Gobi by Khroldorj Choijovanchig sheds light on the human and environmental impact of Mongolia’s mining boom, and Going to Preschool Through the Taiga by Zoljargal Batdelger captures the resilience of Mongolia’s reindeer herding community.

Audiences will also have the opportunity to explore the emerging world of Mongolian animation, featuring highly imaginative works: Departure by Bolormaa Luvsandorj tells a profound tale of karma, death, and the power of compassion, and Wings by Undram Batbold explores themes of self-discovery. The screening also includes a compilation of short films by Mongolian animation students, showcasing the country’s growing talent in the field.

KITE Mongolia extends its deepest gratitude to the Mongolian National Broadcaster, Arts Council of Mongolia, Golden Ger International Film Festival, Mongolian Animation Association, and all participating filmmakers for their invaluable contributions in bringing Mongolian cinema to the Tampere Film Festival.
