MINIKINO

Film festival magic is for everyone, regardless of age, and Minikino is here to make sure of that. These masterfully made shorts have been collected from around the globe to bring a gentle start to grey March mornings.

A common theme connecting all Minikino films is a lack of spoken language: Any viewer anywhere may understand whimsical antics and adventures told through gestures and evocative imagery. That’s why Minikino 1, aimed at children over three, is entirely dedicated to animated films with no dialogue. There is some dialogue in a few of the films in Minikino 2, including the theme’s only live-action film. Minikino 2 is aimed at children over seven.

Adding to this is the many different styles included in the screening, bringing the stories to life through a wide array of techniques and aesthetics. Among the films are Baking with Boris (2023), a gentle cartoon about the power of community in times of trouble, and Bobel’s Kitchen (2024), a charming stop-motion short that showcases the importance of overcoming prejudice – even among mushrooms. Minikino is sure to take you away, and maybe even move you.
