Each year, Tampere Film Festival showcases plenty of student films. Aalto University’s ELO: New Student Films and Tampere University’s Kino-TAMK have solidified their spots as part of our regular programme.
Of course, those aren’t the only schools that teach film, and it’s always interesting to see the work of a new generation of filmmakers. It’s also important to offer these filmmakers a chance to show and see their films at a theatre with an audience. This screening is a compilation of student films from the last three years with as wide a reach as possible.
The screening consists of nine short films. Their subjects range from romantic relationships to political satire and their form from music video to animation. The only genre not included is documentary.
These films come from Arcada, Metropolia, Laajasalo Folk High School, Muurla Folk High School, The Sámi Education Institute and Helsinki Vocational College. Their stories include the struggles of youth, sticking it to the man and laughing at political opportunism. It’s also a delight to see films that have been carefully stylized. Their short form enables them to react to topical issues or focus on the tiniest details, like the wilting of a flower.
