The European Film Academy, EFA, is the counterpart to the American academy. EFA is not as well known as the American Oscars and the process of selecting the best short film is very different from the American one.
Tampere is one of the festivals whose jury selects a candidate for the best European short film for EFA. In the next phase, the festivals vote for five nominees, and the members of EFA then vote for the overall winner that is announced at a yearly gala.
Voting for “the best” film of course always only reflects personal opinion and taste, but the EFA process does allow, for example, highlighting films that are excellent and surprising. Thus, one can say that the five EFA nominees are among the best short films from the past few years.
