How to use art as a tool in integration? Can art work as a moderator? If words aren’t enough, does art help to express yourself?

These are questions which we want to highlight in our People on the road -project’s third seminar on 12th of June. The seminar is also the last one so far.

Before the discussion there is screening of films which were made in People on the road -project 2018-2019. Kalle Raittila, the workshops’ manager will introduce the films. Screening is about 60 minutes and all films are in Finnish.

First film is documentary Toimintaa ja Kohtaamisia Kotirannassa which were made in Mänttä-Vilppula with Kotiranta’s residents and workers. Makia City is an animation made with children of Tammela elementary school, Tampere. Sohvalla is a interview documentary with young immigrant who tell about their thoughts, dreams and experiences living in Finland.

Vapaaehtoiset is a premiere of documentary which is about the volunteers who help and work with people who has moved to Finland. RyhmisNuoret Maahanmuuttajien tukena was made in Helsinki with Ryhmisnuoret, the theatre group which consist of both migrant youngster and “Finnish” youngters.

Documentary Pistokkaat (20 min) is premiere too. It’s about ARC-project where immigrants can get involved with local society by gardening. The name “Pistokkaat” means cuttings in English. Cuttings are parts of plants which have been cut off and been planted somewhere else to grow and bloom and have a new life. In Tampere, the project started a year ago and it’s still on in Hiedanranta where one of the gardens is.

The discussion after screening concentrates on art: different professionals tell about their projects and experiences in integration processes. In discussion participates researcher and theater director Ilaria Tucci (Tampere University), designer Mustafa Alshihani (Modus), museum lector Anne Keskitalo (Tampere city) ja neighbourhood coordinator Imran Adan (Naapurijurtta). Moderated by Jukka-Pekka Laakso. The discussion is Finnish-English and open and free for everyone. Find happening also here:
