NORDISK PANORAMA: Maria Stoianova

Maria is the Market Manager at Nordisk Panorama. She manages the market year round. Nordisk Panorama Market promotes new Nordic short films and documentaries and hosts several pitching events, meetings, networking opportunities and talks during the festival as well as handles an online catalogue of some 250 new titles each year presented to the industry. 

SHEFFIELD DOC/FEST: Melanie Iredale

Melanie Iredale has been involved in Sheffield Doc/Fest since 2010, was appointed as Deputy Director in 2014, served as Interim Director of the 2019 edition, and co-curates the Rhyme & Rhythm strand. Melanie’s background is as a film curator and festival producer. As Director of Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival, she commissioned moving image works, installations and performances which went on to tour to festivals and galleries world-wide. She is on the Development Forum for BFI FAN’s This Way Up conference, is regularly invited to speak on the topic of diversity, inclusion and ethics in the industry, and has participated on Juries including Nordisk Panorama, ZagrebDox and One World Media.

BLACK NIGHTS FILM FESTIVAL, PÖFF SHORTS: Laurence Boyce

Laurence Boyce started out at the Leeds International Film Festival in the UK to become an award-winning critic for various outlets, including Sight and Sound and Screen International. He currently resides in Tallinn, Estonia, where is the head of programme for the live action section of PÖFF Shorts, a part of the A-List festival Black Nights. He is a member of BAFTA, FIPRESCI, the European Film Academy, London Critics’ Circle and is on the board of the Short Film Conference.

Founded in 1997, the Black Nights Film Festival takes place annually at the end of November. With an attendance of over 90 000, it is the only FIAPF-accredited competitive (A- category) film festival in Northern Europe and screens a wide variety of features in competition alongside programmes, retrospectives and industry sessions. PÖFF Shorts is a ‘sub-festival’ of Black Nights. Taking place at the same time as its parent festival, PÖFF Shorts brings audiences live action, animation, documentary and experimental shorts across five different competitions and a diverse side programme.  PÖFF Shorts is an Academy Award Qualifying festival, a BAFTA qualifying event as well as an European Film Academy nominating festival.

INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ROTTERDAM: Koen de Rooij

International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) offers a high quality line-up of carefully selected fiction and documentary feature films, short films and media art. The festival’s focus is on recent work by talented new filmmakers. However, within the four sections the Festival presents, there is also room for retrospectives and themed programmes. IFFR actively supports new and adventurous filmmaking talent through its co-production market CineMart, its Hubert Bals Fund, Rotterdam Lab and other industry activities.

Koen de Rooij is a film programmer based in Rotterdam. In 2016, he graduated cum laude from Leiden University with a master’s degree in History, Arts and Cultures of Asia, during which he specialised in East and South-East Asian cinema. His main interest lies in the continuing influences of national borders, migration and the (colonial) past on the lives of humans and how this is reflected in film. At IFFR he works with the “Voices Short” which is part of the “Voices” section. The films that are presented in Voices are driven by their powerful stories, their distinct characters, their captivating subjects and important themes. Each film brings a distinct viewpoint on the world we live in, told by filmmakers with a confident voice.

MINIMALEN SHORT FILM FESTIVAL: Per Fikse

Minimalen Short Film Festival is situated in Trondheim, Norway. The festival screens approx 250 films each year, with a competition specific to films from the Nordic Countires and a competition for films from the rest of the world – as well as focus programmes and retrospectives. Nordic Shorts Expo is a networking event tailored to help participating films and filmmakers connect with international buyers and festivals. The 33rd Minimalen is due January 2021.

Per Fikse is the Festival Director for Minimalen Short Film Festival since 1999 and programmer since 1994. He states: ‘The ideal filmmaker should be on a constant quest to find the right form for each story. Not that shorts necessarily need to tell a story, but basically, each film should have its own fingerprint, a uniqueness which goes far beyond the constant re-telling of the same storyline the way we see it in the contemporary film industry.’

UPPSALA SHORT FILM FESTIVAL: Niclas Due Gillberg

Founded in 1982, Uppsala Short Film Festival has since become Sweden’s premier arena for short film and one of the most important short film festivals in Europe. Every year the festival screens more than 300 short films in different sections exploring the diversity and richness of the short film. The programme also includes talks, seminars and events. The festival is recognised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, European Film Academy and BAFTA. The 39th Uppsala Short Film Festival takes place 19-25 October 2020.

Niclas Due Gillberg was born in 1980 in Uppsala, Sweden. He has studied Film Studies, Aesthetics and Art History at Uppsala University and Stockholm University. He has a degree in Film Curation at Göteborg University. Since 2001 he has worked with Uppsala Short Film Festival and since 2004 he has been the Director of the festival. He is also a freelance writer, lecturer and curator.  


SESSION 2: FINANCIERS & BUYERS (One-on-one)

THE FINNISH FILM FOUNDATION, SES: Piia Nokelainen & Pekka Uotila | SUOMEN ELOKUVASÄÄTIÖ, SES: Piia Nokelainen ja Pekka Uotila

The mission of the Finnish Film Foundation is to support and promote the Finnish film industry. The Film Foundation provides support for the professional production of films and their presentation and distribution through various distribution channels. The foundation is also responsible for the cultural export of Finnish cinema and distributes grants for the international activities of films. The aim of the foundation is to promote high-quality, diverse and original Finnish film production.

Piia Nokelainen and Pekka Uotila are presenters at the Film Foundation. They act as presenters for short and documentary films, short (less than 22 minutes) TV production (development and production), short and documentary (marketing and distribution), and documentary screenplay grant decisions.

Suomen elokuvasäätiön tehtävänä on tukea ja edistää suomalaista elokuva-alaa. Elokuvasäätiö myöntää tukea elokuvien ammattimaiseen tuotantoon sekä niiden esittämiseen ja levittämiseen erilaisissa jakelukanavissa. Säätiö vastaa keskeisesti myös suomalaisen elokuvan kulttuuriviennistä ja jakaa elokuvien kansainvälisen toiminnan tukea. Säätiön tavoitteena on edistää korkeatasoista, monipuolista ja omaperäistä suomalaista elokuvatuotantoa.

Piia Nokelainen ja Pekka Uotila ovat tukiesittelijöitä elokuvasäätiössä. He toimivat lyhyt- ja dokumenttielokuvien sekä lyhyt jaksoisten (alle 22 min.) tv-sarjojen (kehittämis- ja tuotantotuki), lyhyt- ja dokumenttielokuvien (markkinointi- ja levitystuki), sekä dokumenttielokuvien käsikirjoitusapuraha päätösten esittelijöinä.

FINNISH PUBLIC TELEVISION, YLE: Sari Volanen

Yle, Finnish Public Television, is a Finnish public media company with Finland’s most diverse creative work community. Sari Volanen is a commissioning editor for short and documentary films in Finnish Public television “Yle”. 

Yle on suomalaisten oma julkisen palvelun mediayhtiö ja maan monipuolisin luovan työn yhteisö. Sari Volanen on lyhyt- ja dokumenttielokuvien tuottaja Ylellä. 

AVEK, THE PROMOTION CENTRE FOR AUDIOVISUAL CULTURE: Mikko Peltonen

We use copyright funds to promote audiovisual culture by supporting works, productions and projects by professionals. Our funds come mainly from private copying credits from the state budget, that is, we redistribute the authors’ money to the authors. We are part of Kopiosto, a copyright organization. By our values, we are open to the new. We encourage and develop, in partnership with the industry, a variety of ways to create an audiovisual culture. We support the production of documentaries, short films and short animation films, as well as media art, internationalization of the field, in-service training of audiovisual professionals and the organization of events and festivals in the field. Approximately 50-60 film projects receive grants each year.

AVEK Production Adviser Mikko Peltonen is in charge of the distribution of the film grants.

Edistämme tekijänoikeusvaroilla audiovisuaalista kulttuuria tukemalla alan ammattilaisten teoksia, tuotantoja ja hankkeita. Varamme ovat pääasiassa peräisin valtion budjetista saatavasta yksityisen kopioinnin hyvityksestä eli jaamme tekijöiden rahaa takaisin tekijöille. Toimimme osana tekijänoikeusjärjestö Kopiostoa. Arvojemme mukaisesti olemme avoimia uudelle. Tuemme rohkeasti ja monipuolisesti erilaisia tapoja luoda audiovisuaalista kulttuuria ja kehitämme sitä yhdessä alan kanssa. Tuemme dokumenttielokuvien, lyhytelokuvien ja lyhyiden animaatioelokuvien sekä mediataideteosten tuotantoa, alan kansainvälistymistä, audiovisuaalisen alan ammattilaisten täydennyskoulutusta ja alan tapahtumien ja festivaalien järjestämistä. Vuosittain tukea saa noin 50-60 elokuvahanketta.

THE ARTS PROMOTION CENTRE FINLAND, TAIKE: Sari Ilmola |
TAITEEN EDISTÄMISKESKUS, TAIKE: Sari Ilmola

The Arts Promotion Center (Taike) provides grants for the promotion of art and culture. Taike has 20 Arts Councils, of which the State Audiovisual Arts Council, among other things, assigns grants and artist grants to film, media, light and sound professionals.

Specialist Sari Ilmola is the presenter for Audiovisual Arts and the Committees of Pirkanmaa, Central Finland and Satakunta.

The meetings with Taike are meant for Finnish filmmakers and filmmakers living in Finland.

Taiteen edistämiskeskus (Taike) jakaa apurahoja ja avustuksia taiteen ja kulttuurin edistämiseen noin 40 miljoonaa euroa vuodessa. Taikella on 20 taidetoimikuntaa, joista valtion audiovisuaalisten taiteiden toimikunta muun muassa myöntää kohdeapurahoja ja taiteilija-apurahoja elokuva-, media-, valo- ja äänitaiteen ammattilaisille.

Erityisasiantuntija Sari Ilmola toimii audiovisuaalisten taiteiden sekä Pirkanmaan, Keski-Suomen ja Satakunnan toimikuntien esittelijä.

Tapaamiset Taiken kanssa ovat tarkoitettu suomalaisille ja suomessa työskenteleville elokuvantekijöille.

FILM TAMPERE: Maiju Viiki

Film Tampere programme is part of Tampere region’s economic development agency Business Tampere. Film Tampere acts as a local Film Commissions and is committed to develop the audiovisual industry of the region. Maiju Viiki is the specialist of Film Tampere. Her main responsibility lies with administrating the Tampere’s regional production incentive (10-15%). Maiju is also generally able to guide you with other funding possibilities in Finland. Business Tampereen hallinnoima Film Tampere -ohjelma toimii alueellisena elokuvakomissiona. Film Tampereen tehtävänä on auttaa elokuva- ja TV-tuotantoja sijoittumaan alueelle, edistää Tampereen kilpailukykyä av-alalla sekä tukea paikallisen yritysten kehitystä. Maiju Viiki toimii Film Tampereessa asiantuntijana vastuualueenaan Tampereen tuotantokannustimen hallinnointi. Maiju osaa opastaa yleisesti myös muista kotimaisista rahoitusvaihtoehdoista. AUDIOVISUAL PRODUCERS FINLAND – APFI: Heli Vahvanen-Mölsä

The mission of Audiovisual Producers Finland – APFI is to protect the interests of Finnish producers of audiovisual content, to promote internationalization, to collectively manage copyrights and to organize events and competitions in the field. APFI supports production companies in both contract and copyright matters, develops the business of the industry as a whole, and promotes domestic content in international markets.

Before joining APFI, Heli Vahvanen-Mölsä, Project Manager at APFI, worked for both Elokuvatuottajat ry and Tuotos, and she has many years of experience, especially in the field of interest representation. Currently, her job responsibilities are split between various export projects, such as events, showcases, training, and lobbying.

With Heli you can discuss about finding suitable international co-production partners and financing, and what marketing and sales materials you need when pitching your production.

Audiovisual Producers Finland – APFI:n tehtävinä ovat suomalaisen audiovisuaalisen sisältötuotantoalan tuottajien edunvalvonta, kansainvälistymisen edistäminen, tekijänoikeuksien kollektiivinen hallinnointi sekä alan tapahtumien ja kilpailujen järjestäminen. APFI:n tukee tuotantoyhtiöitä niin sopimus- kuin tekijänoikeusasioissa, kehittää koko alan liiketoimintaa kilpailukykyisemmäksi sekä tekee kotimaisia sisältöjä entistä tunnetummaksi kansainvälisillä markkinoilla.

APFI:n projektipäällikkö Heli Vahvanen-Mölsä työskenteli ennen APFI:n perustamista sekä Elokuvatuottajat ry:ssä että Tuotoksessa, ja hänellä on usean vuoden kokemus erityisesti alan edunvalvonnasta. Tällä hetkellä työtehtävät jakaantuvat erilaisten vientihankkeiden, kuten tapahtumien, showcasejen ja koulutusten tuottamisen sekä edunvalvontatehtävien kesken.

OUAT MEDIA: Sabrina Spence

Sabrina Spence is the Interim General Manager of Ouat Media Inc., an international sales and distribution company specializing in short films. Sabrina entered the sales and distribution business with over 8 years of experience in broadcast programming. She has programmed for both specialty and conventional television stations specializing in the promotion and exhibition of short films.

KURZFILMAGENTUR HAMBURG: Axel Behrens

Axel Behrens is Head of the Theatrical Distribution Department of the Kurzfilm Agentur in Hamburg, Germany’s distributor of the years 1996, 2004 and 2014. In this function he has selected and organised several short film programmes which he distributed in German cinemas along with over 700 short films for single distribution. Since 1986 he was part of the NO BUDGET Short Film Festival (now known as the Kurzfilm Festival Hamburg, of which he was a board member between 1997 and 1999) and he was one of the founders of the Kurzfilm Agentur Hamburg in 1992.

The KurzFilmAgentur Hamburg spreads high quality short films around the world since 1992.

At the heart of the Agency’s work are its theatrical distribution and world sales departments with a catalogue of about 500 awarded inernational films as well as the Kurzfilm Festival Hamburg and the Mo&Friese Children Short Film Festival. In addition, KFA also regularly works on all kinds of other short-film related projects. It serves as a link between filmmakers, exhibitors and consumers and plays an active role in both German and EU film policy.

The Agency also does a lot of programming commissions for film festivals, institutions and private companies in Germany and abroad. It finds and compiles films, procures screening copies and contributes to diverse cultural events with its film expertise. For all its work, the Agency can rely on its staff members’ vast experience in the field as well as its own comprehensive archive and database.

WACKY TIE FILMS: Pasi Hakkio

Awarded for its documentaries and short films, Wacky Tie Films is located in Kehräsaari in the heart of Tampere. For the last couple of years, the company has focused on developing its own films, both internally and with freelance directors and screenwriters. The second leg of the company consists of editing services for other production companies. In recent years, our clients have included Tuffi Films, It’sAliveFilms, Production Company Made and Production Company Aamu. Pasi is one of the producers of Wacky Tien and looks for content that fits the company’s values, at the moment especially long form, and talks about the collaborative patterns that Film Tampere makes possible.

Dokumenteista ja lyhytelokuvistaan palkittu Wacky Tie Films sijaitsee Tampereen ytimessä Kehräsaaressa. Viimeiset pari vuotta yritys on keskittynyt erityisesti omien elokuvien kehittämiseen, joita tehdään sekä talon sisäisesti, että freelance ohjaajien ja käsikirjoittajien kanssa. INTERFILM – SHORT FILM DISTRIBUTION: Cord Dueppe

Interfilm’s internationally operating short film sales and distribution has been established in 1999, offering a wide variety of short fiction and animated films to TV, internet, educational, closed-circuit and other media worldwide. We also provide a theatrical distribution catalogue with over 400 short fims to be screened as shorts before features. interfilm Berlin also hosts the Academy Award© qualifying interfilm Berlin International Short Film Festival, one of the biggest and most important festivals for short film, operating since 1982.

Cord Dueppe is Interfilm’s Short Film Distribution’s head of sales and distribution. They are looking for fiction and animation (any genre) films which running time is maximum of 20 minutes.

SCANBOX: Riina Liukkonen 

Established in 1980, Scanbox Entertainment is one of the leading independent film distributors in Scandinavia, releasing approximately 30 theatrical titles annually, and a total of 40+ titles direct-to-DVD and VOD. The company’s line-up covers all genres, but primarily focusing on upmarket content and local productions. Scanbox has recently entered an exclusive output deal with Amazon Studios on the Scandinavian market, including titles both acquired and produced by Amazon, solidifying its placement on the Scandinavian market.

Riina Liukkonen is Scanbox’s Head of Finnish Production.
