Tampere Film Festival is one of Europe\u2019s most significant short film festivals, bringing together thousands of film lovers and industry professionals in Tampere every year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The festival kicks off on Wednesday, 4 March, with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/opening-screening\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opening Screening<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Finnkino Cine Atlas, featuring a selection of short films from various festival screenings. The festival week continues with more than one hundred film screenings at Finnkino Cine Atlas and Arthouse Cinema Niagara until Sunday, 8 March. The competitions culminate in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/awards-after-party\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Awards and After Party<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Saturday, 7 March, at the atmospheric Comedy Theatre Palace. Alongside the competition screenings, the festival presents an extensive thematic programme and several intriguing special screenings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Two Star Guests and Emerging Talents<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2026 festival will welcome both a Finnish and an international guest of honour: <\/span><b>Ulla Heikkil\u00e4<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>R\u00fanar R\u00fanarsson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme2026\/screenings\/in-the-spotlight-ulla-heikkila\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Spotlight: Ulla Heikkil\u00e4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> programme presents a retrospective of short films by director and screenwriter Ulla Heikkil\u00e4, as well as a Carte blanche screening curated by Heikkil\u00e4 herself, featuring films that are important to her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heikkil\u00e4 is known for her feature films <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eden<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Finland, 2020) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life Is a Party<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El\u00e4m\u00e4 on juhla<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Finland, 2025), and her short films have been screened at numerous festivals around the world. At Tampere Film Festival, the following short films from her body of work will be shown: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#barewithme<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#sovitus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Finland, 2016), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waste Land <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joutomaa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Finland, 2016), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let Her Speak<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Sweden, Finland, 2019), and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golgatha <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Finland, 2016). His films have received international acclaim for over two decades. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme2026\/screenings\/in-the-spotlight-runar-runarsson\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Spotlight: R\u00fanar R\u00fanarsson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> screenings present a selection of his short films as well as the feature-length fiction film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Echo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bergm\u00e1l<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Iceland, 2019). R\u00fanarsson will also attend the festival in connection with the screenings, and audiences will have the opportunity to explore his career and work in a free, open-to-the-public <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/runar-runarsson-masterclass\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masterclass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rising stars will also be given a platform in several screenings, including the student film showcases <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/kino-tamk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kino-TAMK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/elo-new-student-films\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ELO: New Student Films<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme2026\/screenings\/pitch\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PITCH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> screenings, which consist of award-winning graduate thesis films from a joint pitching event between five Finnish film schools. Team: Huuki) \/ Uneton48<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Films on Faith, Southeast Asia, and Gems of the Archives<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the festival\u2019s thematic programme, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme2026\/screenings\/faith\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> programme presents films from the 1960s to the present day that examine Christianity sharply yet respectfully and with open curiosity. The programme includes a public discussion titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/faith-and-democracy-discussion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faith and Democracy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, organised in collaboration with Tampere University\u2019s Democracy Research Network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geographically, the 2026 programme turns its focus to Southeast Asia in the screenings <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme2026\/screenings\/20-years-of-capturing-reality-in-southeast-asia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 Years of Capturing Reality in Southeast Asia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The films shed light on the film industry of a multicultural, rapidly changing, and deeply conflicted region, documenting real life in the area. The programme also includes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/southeast-asia-5-behind-the-screen-film-talk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a discussion event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that requires advance registration, where invited guests will talk about what it is like to make films in a politically unstable region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gems from the Archives are showcased in the National Audiovisual Institute\u2019s (KAVI) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme2026\/screenings\/finnish-film-archive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finnish Film Archive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> screenings. The first screening, 100 Years of Radio in Finland, celebrates the centenary of the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle with documentaries about Finnish radio. A world premiere will be held for the feature-length <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/vastavirta-documentary\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vastavirta Documentary<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Finland, 2026), which delves into the history of a legendary punk club in Tampere.
