Awards were given in the National and International Competitions as well as the Generation XYZ Competition for genre films.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the evening, the audience favourites were also recognized, and the Sustainability Award Verso focusing on the ecological sustainability of film productions was presented. The jury was impressed by the film&#8217;s original and unexpected take on the subject of colonialism in which the filmmaker plays with the idea of our relationship with the other in a very sarcastic but deeply touching way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being John Smith<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (UK, 2024), an experimental documentary by <\/span><b>John Smith<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was chosen as the Tampere Candidate for the European Film Academy\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Short Film \u2013 Prix Vimeo Award 2026<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to the jury, the film shows us that being a well-known filmmaker doesn\u2019t mean that you are always comfortable with yourself, and sure of what you are doing and why.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The award for Best Documentary in the International Competition went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dom strom<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Slovakia, 2024) by <\/span><b>Katar\u00edna Gramatov\u00e1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Best Animation was awarded to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zima<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Poland, 2023), directed by <\/span><b>Tomek Popakul <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> Kasumi Ozeki<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Best Fiction Award went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He Ma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (China, 2025), directed by <\/span><b>JJ Lin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Audience Award for the International Competition went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Iceland, Sweden, 2024) by <\/span><b>R\u00fanar R\u00fanarsson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The jury for the International Competition included <\/span><b>Gabriel\u0117 Cegialyt\u0117<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Oskar Forst\u00e9n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Fariba Haidari<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Ivan Ramljak<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Ariunaa Tserenpil<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>National Competition<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the National Competition, the Main Prize for films under 30 minutes was awarded to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Underdog<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Finland, 2024) by <\/span><b>Marjo Levlin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to the jury, w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ith humility and profound respect for the audience and the cinematic art form, the director skillfully crafts an experience that neither manipulates nor confines, but rather liberates us through an innovative and mesmerizing approach. Effortlessly bridging intimate childhood memories and passing through the darkest corridors of human thought, the film invites us into a deeply resonant reflection on our shared humanity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Special Prize in the same category went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peppermint Diesel 20%<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Finland, 2024) by <\/span><b>Mariangela Pluchino<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The film was described as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refreshing take on the classic rape and revenge motif. The film shows how girls can have fun and take visual pleasure in narrative genre films.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Award of the Youth Jury for films under 30 minutes went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muistokirjoitus \/ Saarelaiset<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Finland, 2024) by <\/span><b>Matleena J\u00e4nis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The jury praised the film for its personal subject matter, emotional impact, artistically inspiring triptych form and effortless storytelling. The film also received a Special Mention in the National Competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the National Competition for films over 30 minutes, the Main Prize was exceptionally awarded to two films. The joint award went to the documentaries <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two Forests<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (dir. <\/span><b>Jan Ij\u00e4s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Finland, 2024) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sirkus Tuomento<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (dir. <\/span><b>Veli Gran\u00f6<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Finland, 2025). According to the jury, Ij\u00e4s\u2019 film captivates <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through its meticulous form and subtle camerawork<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while Gran\u00f6\u2019s film <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brings us face to face with the ever-relevant cycle of family violence perpetuated across generations and its consequences, and examines art\u2019s role in an individual\u2019s life. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gran\u00f6&#8217;s film also received the Church Media Foundation Prize.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Special Prize for films over 30 minutes in the National Competition was given to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kurkien \u00e4iti<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Finland, 2024), a feature documentary by <\/span><b>Iiris H\u00e4rm\u00e4<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The film was described as a gentle portrait in which the filmmaker <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">captures the unique intelligence of an adventurous woman and her faith in the power of nature and joy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Finnish Film Foundation\u2019s annual Risto Jarva Prize was given to <\/span><b>Veera Lamminp\u00e4\u00e4\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> animation <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merenel\u00e4vi\u00e4<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Finland, 2024). The jury noted that the film stood out for its freedom of expression, as neither the content nor the form limits its creativity. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film shines with a sense of freedom in filmmaking while making sharp yet gentle use of dark humour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lamminp\u00e4\u00e4&#8217;s film also won several other awards. In the National Competition, it was awarded a Special Mention and the Student Award. Additionally, it was chosen as the\u00a0 Tampere Nominee for the European Short Film Audience Award. The entire production team was awarded the Sustainability Award Verso (City of Tampere, Audiovisual Producers Finland \u2013 APFI, Tampere Film Festival) for the ecological sustainability of the film&#8217;s production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Golden Shade Equipment Rental Prize For Cinematographer (Valofirma \u2013 The Light House, Kamerafirma \u2013 The Camera House) went to cinematographer <\/span><b>M\u00e1t\u00e9 Papp<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Name is Hope<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Finland, 2025). The Audience Award for the National Competition went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sopeutumaton<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Finland, 2025), a feature documentary by <\/span><b>Miikka Poutiainen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Competition jury consisted of<\/span><b> Sawandi Groskind,<\/b> <b>Tuija Halttunen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Mara Marxsen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Generation XYZ<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Best Genre Film Award went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Eggregores\u2019 Theory<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Italy, 2024) by <\/span><b>Andrea Gatopoulos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to the jury, the film literally illustrates a distorted mirror image of our distorted world, discussing the political trends and artificial intelligence with evocative power. It is, in a very unique and lyrical way, elegantly entwining the content and the form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Special Mention in the Generation XYZ Competition went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Pecera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Mexico, 2023) by <\/span><b>Victoria Garza<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Audience Award went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parasomnia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Spain, 2024), directed by <\/span><b>Daniel Noblom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The jury for Generation XYZ was <\/span><b>Salom\u00e9 Crickx<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Johanna Sinisalo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span><b> Niina Virtanen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sylvi Prizes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Writers Guild of Finland has awarded the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sylvi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Prize for the best screenplay since 1985. Numerous leading Finnish screenwriters have won the award. The prize is given based on the script, not the film or series. This year, the Sylvi Prizes were presented once again at the Tampere Film Festival Award Ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sylvi Prize for the Best Film Script was given to <\/span><b>Tuuli Kanervankallio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Hannele Lampela<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prinsessa Pikkiriikki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Finland, 2024). The screenplay was described as cohesive and dense, neither attempting to expand beyond its scope nor flirting with various styles. The events of the story are simultaneously familiar and constantly surprising. As a screenplay, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prinsessa Pikkiriikki<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a refreshingly bold and personal tribute to imagination and play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sylvi Prize for the Best TV Series Script was awarded to <\/span><b>Laura Suhonen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sekunnit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a carefully written drama series. The jury praised the series for its depth and carefully crafted plot, with compelling characters and well-paced narrative tension.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Awarded Films Screenings on Sunday at Finnkino Cine Atlas<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The award-winning films will be screened on Sunday, 9 March, starting at 10:30 at the Finnkino Cine Atlas cinema.
