{"id":55408,"date":"2025-02-11T13:01:43","date_gmt":"2025-02-11T11:01:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/?p=55408"},"modified":"2025-08-14T16:41:44","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T13:41:44","slug":"the-full-programme-of-tampere-film-festival-has-been-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/the-full-programme-of-tampere-film-festival-has-been-released\/","title":{"rendered":"The Full Programme of Tampere Film Festival Has Been Released"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tampere Film Festival will be celebrated for the 55th time from 5 to 9 March, and the event\u2019s full programme has now been published.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The festival will kick off spectacularly on Wednesday, 5 March, at Finnkino Plevna&#8217;s iSense screening room with the Finnish premiere of acclaimed filmmaker <\/span><b>Pirjo Honkasalo&#8217;s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highly anticipated new film <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/opening-screening-orenda\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orenda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Finland, 2025)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In addition to Honkasalo, both the film&#8217;s lead actress and screenwriter <\/span><b>Pirkko Saisio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as <\/span><b>Alma P\u00f6ysti<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also starring in the film, will be in attendance. After the Opening Screening, the festival week will continue with over a hundred film screenings at Finnkino Cine Atlas and Arthouse Cinema Niagara. In addition to the screenings, there will also be a variety of events open to the public, as well as professional gatherings aimed at those in the film industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The focus of the programme will be the competition screenings in the prestigious competition categories, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme2025\/screenings\/international-competition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International,<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme2025\/screenings\/national-competition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme2025\/screenings\/generation-xyz\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generation XYZ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Competition for genre films. The competitions will culminate in the awarding of the winners at the Award Ceremony on Saturday, 8 March, at Olympia. In addition to the competition screenings, the festival will present a comprehensive thematic programme and several intriguing special screenings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Themes of 2025 \u2013 Mongolia, Lithuania, UG, Radical Care<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2025 thematic programme will turn the spotlight on Mongolia and Lithuania. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme2025\/screenings\/mongolia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mongolia screenings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will include Mongolian animation and films exploring society, culture, and youth perspectives. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme2025\/screenings\/lithuania\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lithuania programme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will focus, for example, on films by Lithuanian female filmmakers and the avant garde. This Lithuania theme also marks the beginning of a broader collaboration planned between Tampere&#8217;s cultural events and the Lithuanian Culture Institute for 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In local collaboration with the Tampere University\u2019s Democracy Research Network, a thematic programme titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme2025\/screenings\/radical-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radical Care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been created, continuing last year&#8217;s Democracy in Danger programme. This theme will also feature an open-to-the-public <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/care-and-democracy-panel-discussion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Care and Democracy Panel Discussion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The local subculture will be highlighted in the UG-themed screening <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/tampere-ug-en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tampere UG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, curated by subculture activist <\/span><b>Sami Ylipihlaja<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. All films in this screening will have their world premieres at Tampere Film Festival. The UG theme will also offer a glimpse into <\/span><b>Annette Kennerley\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> intimate portrayal of British queer culture in the 80s and 90s with the screening<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/club-des-femmes-annette-kennerley-en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Club des Femmes: Annette Kennerley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Kennerley will also be present at the screening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A key filmmaker featured at this year\u2019s festival is the renowned director Pirjo Honkasalo, whose work will be showcased in a unique and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme2025\/screenings\/in-the-spotlight-pirjo-honkasalo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extensive retrospective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in addition to the Opening Screening. Honkasalo will be in Tampere for the festival week and will attend the screenings and events related to the programme. As part of the programme, the film <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/honkasalo-concrete-night\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concrete Night<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Finland, Sweden, Denmark, 2013)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which won six Jussi Awards, will be shown. The screening will also feature a visit from the film&#8217;s lead actor, <\/span><b>Johannes Brotherus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In addition, Honkasalo has curated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/honkasalo-carte-blanche-en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a Carte blanche screening<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the festival, including films that are personally significant to her. The public will have the chance to engage in free discussions about Honkasalo\u2019s career and work during open public discussion events.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Rising Stars and Gems from the Archive<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rising talents will be highlighted in student film screenings such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/finnish-film-schools\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finnish Film Schools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/kino-tamk-en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kino-TAMK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/elo-new-student-films\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ELO: New Student Films<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The festival will also showcase films created in the Nordic region\u2019s largest short film challenge, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/uneton48-en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uneton48<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which involves making a film in just 48 hours. Additionally,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/kino-euphoria-en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the latest works from the Euphoria Borealis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> film organisation will be presented, all of which were shot in only three days during the Kino Kabaret workshops.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gems from the archives will be featured in the Finnish Film Archive\u2019s (KAVI)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screenings. The first screening, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/finnish-film-archive-1-urho-kekkonen-125th-anniversary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urho Kekkonen 125th Anniversary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, celebrates president <\/span><b>Urho Kekkonen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, offering a journey into his legacy as a passionate sportsman and a phenomenon living in the memories of the people. The second screening, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/finnish-film-archive-2-films-about-making-films\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Films about Making Films<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, presents nostalgic meta-films that turn the camera towards itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/av-arkki-y2k-en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AV-arkki screening Y2K<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the audience will dive back to the turn of the millennium with short films made in 1999 and 2000. We will also honor the late legend of Tampere Film Festival, <\/span><b>Raimo &#8220;Rake&#8221; Silius<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with his final curatorial work, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/rake-special\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rake Special 2025<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Silius curated this screening for the 2025 festival before his passing. The screening features humorous depictions of Finnish rural romanticism dating back to the 1940s.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Special Screenings and Activities for Children<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the special screenings, the traditional live-accompanied screening will be presented at Tampere Cathedral, featuring <\/span><b>Teuvo Puro&#8217;s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 1927 silent film <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/the-changeling\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Changeling<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which tells a story of family secrets. In collaboration with Yle Teema, a screening titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/tff-yle-30-years-of-uusi-kino\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30 Years of Uusi Kino<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will showcase significant short films from the history of the programme. The special screening <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/witness-arctic-indigenous-voices-en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Witness: Arctic Indigenous Voices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will highlight films that depict the survival and struggle for a better tomorrow by the indigenous peoples of the Arctic regions. On Saturday evening of the festival week, <\/span><b>Mika Taanila\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experimental feature film <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme\/failed-emptiness\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Failed Emptiness<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Finland, 2024) will also be shown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the youngest audience members, free screenings <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/programme2025\/screenings\/minikino\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minikino 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minikino 2<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be offered. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minikino 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will feature dialogue-free animations for children over 3 years old, while <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minikino 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will present animations and fiction films for children over 7 years old.
