Awards were given in International, National and the Generation XYZ Competition. In addition, audience favourites were awarded, as well as the winner of the Sustainability Award Verso. For the first time, Sylvi Prizes by the Writers Guild of Finland for the Best Film Script and the Best TV Script were also handed out at the Award Ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>International Competition<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main prize of the International Competition, Grand Prix, went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wander to Wonder <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(The Netherlands, France, Belgium, 2023) by <\/span><b>Nina Gantz<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The film was also chosen as Tampere\u2019s Short Film Candidate for the European Film Awards 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International Competition Jury described the film as inventive and bittersweet. The film sucks the viewer into a children\u2019s TV show whose production has been interrupted, leaving the animated main characters with nowhere to go. Carefully crafted down to its every detail, the film doubles as a moving and playful meditation on storytelling and all its possibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shotplayer <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(United States, 2023) by <\/span><b>Sam Shainberg<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was chosen as Best Documentary in the International Competition. The award for Best Animation went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La saison pourpre <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(France, 2023) by <\/span><b>Cl\u00e9mence Bouchereau<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Jury pick for Best Fictional Film went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oyu <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(France, 2023) by <\/span><b>Atsushi Hirai<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The International Competition chose to give their Special Mention to the documentary <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leila <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Sweden, 2023) by <\/span><b>Fariba Haidari<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Audience Award in the International Competition went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guazuvir\u00e1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Uruguay, 2023) by <\/span><b>Joaquin Ara\u00fajo <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> Nicol\u00e1s Sequeira<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Miguel Dias<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Paul Drey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Nino Orjonkidze<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Anton Vanha-Majamaa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Emily Wright <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">served in the International Jury.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>National Competition<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Main Prize for films under 30 minutes went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lasse kaatuu, voi ei! <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Finland, 2023) by <\/span><b>Risto-Pekka Blom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The juries described the absurd comedy as one that blends fiction together with reality, and through cinematic means creates a fully formed story of the most famous fall in Finnish history, that has a surprising connection to one of the darkest moments in Finnish democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Special Prize in the same competition series went to <\/span><b>Elina Talvensaari\u2019s <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Please <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Finland, 2023). The same film also took home the Risto Jarva Prize and the Prize of the Youth Jury. The film was described as creative and theatrical, telling the story of the obstacles asylum seekers have to face and overcome. The main character\u2019s steadfast attitude while being trapped in the cogs of faceless and unjust bureaucracy is moving in this compassionate and visually innovative documentary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Heta J\u00e4\u00e4linoja\u2019s <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nun or Never! <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Finland, 2023) was chosen as Tampere\u2019s nominee for the European Short Film Audience Award. The crew was also awarded the Sustainability Award Verso. The crew\u2019s way of working in ways that support ecological sustainability was described as systematic and comprehensive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Main Prize for films over 30 minutes in the National Competition went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hard to Break <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Finland, 2023), a documentary by <\/span><b>Anna-Maija Heinonen <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Krista Moisio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to the Jury, the filmmakers succeeded in portraying their young leads\u2019 vulnerability and experiences of social exclusion from their own level and with honesty. The Special Prize was given to <\/span><b>Matti Elo\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eila Babushka \u2013 The Past is a Foreign Country <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Finland, 2024). The film was described as a moving, intimate portrait of rootlessness and identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Church Media Foundation prize was given to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do No Harm <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Finland, 2024) by <\/span><b>Satu Majava <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Joel Tainio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Golden Shade Equipment Rental Prize For Cinematographer was awarded to the cinematographer of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M\u00e1hccan \u2013 Homecoming<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Finland, 2023), <\/span><b>Anssi K\u00f6mi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Tampere Film Festival Student Award was given to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Father\u2019s Badger <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Finland, 2024) by <\/span><b>Sameli Muurim\u00e4ki<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Competition also handed out one Special Mention, which went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every Tom, Dick and Urpo <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Finland, 2023) by <\/span><b>Karoliina Gr\u00f6ndahl<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It was described as a film for every sensitive man in Finland who has experienced bullying. The Audience Award in the National Competition went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not Withholding Anything From You <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Finland, 2023) by <\/span><b>Veikko Aaltonen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Madison Egan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Katja Gauriloff<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Leena Virtanen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> served in the National Jury.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Generation XYZ<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The award for Best Genre Film went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Se dit d\u2019un cerf qui quitte son bois<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Belgium, 2023) by <\/span><b>Salom\u00e9 Crickx<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to the jury, the film poses a drastic and entertaining solution to the issues with an increasingly older population. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Full of surprising twists and turns, the film combines great ensemble acting and an innovative approach to an actual societal issue \u2013 all conceived within a distinct genre setting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Special Mention in the Generation XYZ Competition went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wildmen of the Greater Toronto Area <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Canada, 2023) by <\/span><b>Solmund MacPherson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Audience Award was given to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bannkorb <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Germany, 2024) by <\/span><b>Vincent Ercolani<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Julius Schulze Farwick<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><b> Nicholas Dues<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Aino Suni<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> Anders E. Larsson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><b> Jani P\u00f6s\u00f6<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> served in the Generation XYZ Jury.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sylvi Prizes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 1985, the Writers Guild of Finland has awarded scriptwriting with the Sylvi Prize. The prize has been given to numerous notable Finnish writers, and is judged purely based on text. This is the first year that the winners of the Sylvi Prizes have been announced at Tampere Film Festival\u2019s Award Ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sylvi Prize for the Best TV Script was given to <\/span><b>Paula Mononen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Kaarle Aho<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eroja ja sovintoja. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The series was said to put a radical fresh focus on a middle-aged woman and the people and relationships around her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Je&#8217;vida<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2023), written by <\/span><b>Katja Gauriloff<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Niillas Holmberg<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, won the Sylvi Prize for the Best Film Script. The film was described as a lyrical story of the time when colonialism hiding under the cloak of civilization destroyed the Sami people&#8217;s way of life in such a way that even the main character&#8217;s own name became shameful. The film is a controlled work in form, and the writers&#8217; approach to the subject is very comforting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>See the Awarded Films at Cine Atlas This Sunday<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Awarded films will be played on Sunday, March 10, at Finnkino Cine Atlas starting at 11.
