The five-day event once again gathers film lovers and industry professionals together in Tampere \u2013 during the festival week, there are more than a hundred film screenings at Finnkino Cine Atlas and Arthouse Cinema Niagara. In addition to film screenings, there are also plenty of events open to the general public and aimed at professionals in the film industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The festival, which focuses on short films, shows short films in both National and International Competition series, as well as a versatile theme programme. In addition, the programme presents feature-length documents. The main themes in the 2024 programme include the previously announced <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Democracy in Dang<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which reflects on the state of democracy in Finland and the world, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which examines the many dimensions of the forest in the midst of the capitalist forest debate. In connection with both themes, open panel discussions will also be organized, where the panelists will be, for example, film directors and researchers from the Tampere University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/festival-2024\/\">Check out the full programme.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Short Films from the South Caucasus Region<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the programme, it is customary to highlight films from different parts of the world, and this year, especially films from the countries of the South Caucasus have been selected for the programme. Screenings <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Caucasus 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> curated by <\/span><b>Riina Mikkonen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, executive director of the film festival, offer different windows to Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. During the last century, the area has served as a stage for conflicts, but there is also resistance and hope. The films in the screenings contain versatile storytelling, and they give a touch surface to different lives, historical events and cultural phenomena.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the theme, the screening <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chai Khana: Female Voices of the Caucasus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be shown, where the spotlight is especially on the women of the region and their experiences. Chai Khana is a multimedia platform operating in the South Caucasus region, which strives with its work to raise the voices that are often ignored by the mainstream media. The South Caucasus screenings continue the theme of social influence and democracy, which is strongly visible in the festival&#8217;s programme.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>A Celebration of Animation \u2013 Starring Iiti Yli-Harja<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The programme also shows a lot of animation. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AniDocs 1: Society<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AniDocs 2: Personal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tell stories about humanity, history and the search for identity. The screenings are assembled from documentaries that have been made using different ways of animation. Also, the animation education of Turku University of Applied Sciences\u2019 Academy of Arts is celebrating its 30th anniversary at the Tampere Film Festival with two screenings. The screenings present a diverse range of student films from the school over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Award-winning film director and musician<\/span><b> Iiti Yli-Harja<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who has become one of Finland&#8217;s most prominent animation directors and creators of short films, will be the star of this year&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retrospective<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Carte Blanche<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> screenings. The retrospective screening covers Yli-Harja&#8217;s productions from the 2016 film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To Die in a Dream <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all the way to last year&#8217;s film<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I Smell a Mouse<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2023). The screening also includes the winner of the Jussi award for the best short film<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, All My Mom\u2019s Phone Calls <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2021), and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blush \u2013 An Extraordinary Voyage<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2022), which won the Risto Jarva Prize at the Tampere Film Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carte Blanche <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">screening includes puppet animation, pixilation and video art. According to Yli-Harja, the screening celebrates randomness, joy and curiosity in filmmaking: &#8220;The films in the screening remind us that filmmaking can be the most fun possible thing to do, to wonder and experiment&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Gems from the Archives and Special Screenings<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This time,<\/span><b> Kai Oka&#8217;s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> decades-forgotten experimental films from the archives will be brought to the big screen in the screening <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lost Reels<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as gems from the history of Manserock and advertisements collected by the National Audiovisual Institute. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finnish Film Archive 1: Manserock Phenomenon <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offers an audiovisual cross-section of the most central bands and background influencers of the phenomenon. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finnish Film Archive 2: The best of Finnish Commercial Films<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> goes through the history of Finnish commercial film in the years 1935\u20132000. Both winning works awarded in industry competitions and, more generally, commercial films that have remained in the nation&#8217;s memory have been selected for the screening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Raimo &#8220;Rake&#8221; Silius&#8217;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> traditional <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rake Specia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l is dedicated to legendary film directors:<\/span><b> Matti Kassila<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1924\u20132018), <\/span><b>Risto Jarva<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1934\u20131977), <\/span><b>Jaakko Pakkasvirta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1934\u20132018) and <\/span><b>Antti Peippo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1934\u20131989). Among other things, the screening will include the half-hour Tampere episode of Kassila&#8217;s feature documentary <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Faces of Three Cities<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1962), which, according to Silius, is &#8220;one of the most wonderful Tampere short films&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The roar of history can also be experienced in the Tampere Film Festival and Yle Teema&#8217;s collaborative screening <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Childhood in the South Seas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which shows interconnected documentary films,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Monica in the South Seas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2023) directed by <\/span><b>Mika Taanila<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Sami van Ingen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Moana with Sound<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1926, 1981) by <\/span><b>Robert<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Frances<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Monica Flaherty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other interesting special screenings are, for example, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S\u00e1mi Films in Focus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which brings out S\u00e1mi filmmakers and S\u00e1mi stories, and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Triangle of Hope \u2013 Silent Trilogy by Juho Kuosmanen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, performed in Tampere Cathedral accompanied by organist <\/span><b>Esa Toivola<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will feature short films Romu-Mattila and a beautiful woman (2012), Salaviinanpolttajat (2017) and A Distant Planet (2023) by <\/span><b>Juho Kuosmanen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>For Kids<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are free <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minikino<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> screenings for the youngest in the family:<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Minikino 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is suitable for kids aged around 3 years and older, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minikino 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is suitable for preschoolers and older viewers, as it brings slightly longer and more exciting stories to the screen. In addition, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cinema Concert for Kids<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a free screening accompanied by film music composer <\/span><b>Emil Sana<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tamperefilmfestival.fi\/en\/festival-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out the festival&#8217;s screenings and events.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Series Cards and tickets for individual screenings are on sale on the Lippu.fi online store and ticket outlets.
