The main screening venues are Cine Atlas and Arthouse Cinema Niagara, and other film events, industry programme, discussions and parties are also arranged at the Tampere Cathedral, Hiedanranta, Finlayson Area, Tullikamari, and YO-talo.

The 2022 programme consists of more than 60 national and international short film screenings and feature-length documentaries. In addition to the festival’s Competition Selection (published on 9 February), the programme presents a wide range of special screenings with a strong focus on present-day filmmaking.

Screenings 2022

Events 2022

Industry Programme

Urban Life and Its Side-Effects

Life in the city and urban surroundings are one of the core themes in Tampere Film Festival 2022 programme. The Urban Neverland programme presents two sets of new short films in screenings Urban Scenes 1 & 2, and two screenings by the Finnish Film Archive that invite us to enjoy the nostalgic summer days of Tampere and the authentic Ice Hockey madness. The downsides of the rough city life are seen through the stories of homeless alcoholics in the documentaries The Shadow of a City (1971) and Out of the Shadow (2022) by Hannu Peltomaa.

The spaces of the city and urban development are being discussed on Thursday 10 March in the panel discussion organized by Tampere Film Festival and Tampere University. The themes of urban culture, space and communities are also highlighted in two Skateboarding screenings, and in the new Humanity Stoked documentary by Michael Ien Cohen (USA 2022) that will have its Finnish premiere at the festival. On Sunday 13 March, Pirkanmaan Kaarikoirat will also arrange a free skateboarding event at Hiedanranta, where everyone is welcome to learn skateboarding, enjoy films, and take part in the discussion on equality in skateboarding culture.

A Close Look on Hungary and Indonesia

The theme countries of the 2022 programme are Hungary and Indonesia. The short films of Hungary 1 & 2 are curated together with the Budapest Short Film Festival – BuSho, and the collection is an introduction to present-day Hungarian short fiction films. The programme is also featuring animated films by director Luca Tóth, and a screening called Luca’s Choice, that presents Tóth’s favourite animations by young Hungarian talents.

The Indonesia programme is a versatile selection of hidden gems from a relatively unknown film country. The films are picked by Jukka-Pekka Laakso from Tampere Film Festival and Fransiska Prihadi from the Balinese Minikino Film Week. The genres in Indonesia 1 & 2 range from fiction to documentaries and experimental films, and the screenings foreground the artistic quality and distinctiveness of modern Indonesian filmmaking. Behind the selections is an important question of whether the chosen films are able to expand the idea of Indonesia from the local filmmakers’ point of view.

Avant-Garde, Music, and Video Art

The 2022 programme of Tampere Film Festival also celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Jonas Mekas (1922 Lithuania – 2019 USA), together with many other events around the world this year. Mekas was known as a filmmaker, poet, and artist, and was considered one of the most important avant-garde filmmakers for over 50 years.

Another spotlight director in the programme is Sami Sänpäkkilä whose three retrospective screenings present the gems of Finnish indie music videos and the director’s less known art film pieces. Music will also have a prominent role in the Tampere Cathedral on Friday 11 March, when Carl Th. Dreyer’s silent-film classic La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc (France 1928) will be seen accompanied by the organist Esa Toivola.

Even though the festival will move its headquarters from Cinema Plevna to the new main venue in Cine Atlas, Finlayson Area won’t stay totally quiet. On Saturday evening 12 March, the winner of Tampere Film Festival’s first VJ Competition, Konsta Fed, will perform at Väinö Linna Square with the new projection mapping piece called connection. Visual projections by different VJ Artists will also be seen during the week at many festival clubs in Tullikamari’s Klubi.

Awards

The Competition Programme of Tampere Film Festival will be seen both in cinemas and online on Festhome TV, alongside with a free Moodkino programme (online only). The best films of Tampere Film Festival 2022 will be awarded on Saturday evening 12 March at the Award Ceremony in Cine Atlas. The screenings of the Awarded Films are running from Saturday to Sunday, until the bittersweet end of the festival week.

Tampere Film Festival 2022 takes place in local cinemas and online 9–13 March.
