SJÄLÖ
SJÄLÖ – ISLAND OF SOULS

Lotta Petronella | Finland 2020 | Documentary | 78 min

For centuries, a closed institution served as a final destination for socially transgressive women at Själö, an isolated island in the Baltic Sea. The outcast women were kept there in detention to be observed, studied and measured – in much the same way as the scientists now focus on the surrounding nature at the research center the place has been converted to. While a young scientist is collecting samples on the island, the past emerges in the whispers of the unsent letters and empty rooms of the hospital. The space fills up with hidden memories as the invisible archives become alive. Whose stories are remembered and whose are forgotten?

A rare opportunity to experience a re-mix of feature documentary Själö – Island of Souls screened with a live score. On the stage there will be composer Lau Nau (Laura Naukkarinen) and the film will be narrated live in english by the director Lotta Petronella and other voices.

Själö was premiered on March 2020 at CPH:DOX film festival and was awarded the Special Mention at the Nordic Dox competition for its cinematic exploration, strong visual language and wired soundscape. The film had its Finnish premiere in Love & Anarchy in Helsinki.

The special screening of Själö – Island of Souls took place at Tampere Film Festival on 10 March. The recording of the screening has now been added to Festhome TV.
