Regulations – Generation XYZ 2023

Submission for the Generation XYZ is closed.

Tampere Film Festival and a Hollywood-based production company XYZ Films are hosting a Generation XYZ competition for under-30-minute genre films in the thriller, horror, sci-fi, action, and fantasy categories.

  • Genre films (thriller, horror, sci-fi, action, and fantasy)
  • Maximum length 30 minutes (including credits)
  • Completed 1st of January 2021 or later
  • Completed productions only (working copies accepted ONLY if agreed with the festival)
  • Film can only be submitted once. If you have submitted your film to Tampere 53rd International Short Film Festival’s International or National Competition and would like to submit the same film to Tampere Film Festival Generation XYZ Competition, please let us know by sending a message to We will offer you a free waiver code for your submission
  • Premiere not required
  • Accepted screening formats DCP or Digital File (Apple ProRes422 or H.264)
  • Screening copy must be in or subtitled in English
  • Submitter is responsible for the copyrights
  • By submitting the film, you commit to the screening of the film at the festival if the film is selected
  • No screening fee for selected films
  • Call for entries open 3rd of May, submission fee 9 €/film

  • Make a submission via FilmFreeway
  • Register to the site (if not done earlier)
  • Fill in the submission form
  • Upload at least one still photo of the film (300 dpi)
  • Make sure the preview file is working correctly
  • Preview file must be in or subtitled in English
  • Submit to Tampere Film Festival – Generation XYZ
  • Make the payment
  • Final selections are announced by the end of January 2023 at
  • The submitters of the films will be notified before the public announcement

Selected films will be showcased at the 2023 Tampere Film Festival and judged by an independent jury. The organizers will nominate an international jury of three members. The following prizes will be given to the film directors:

In addition to the prizes mentioned above and with the approval of the festival, it is also possible for other organizations and associations to award films in the Generation XYZ Competition

  • Information given in the entry form (synopsis, credits etc.) can be used as such in marketing and publicity
  • Screening copy must be delivered at least two (2) weeks before the festival
  • Screening copy must have English subtitles and be identical to the preview copy
  • Films will be subtitled in Finnish
  • Festival is authorized to make one excerpt not exceeding 10% or max. 3 minutes of the total running time of the selected films to be used in promoting the festival in various medias and the Internet
  • Festival will insure the screening copy while in the festival’s possession (The insurance will follow the regulations of FIAPF)
  • Festival will cover the return expenses of the screening copy if needed
  • Festival will not pay screening fees for films selected into the competition
  • Festival offers the representative of the film (1 person) accommodation for 3 nights in Tampere during the festival

Films selected into the Generation XYZ Competition may also be screened online for the festival audience in Finland if agreed by the submitter. Tampere online film festival will be available via for two weeks in March 2023.


Films selected to the Generation XYZ Competition will automatically be entered into Tampere Film Festival’s Online Film Library. The Online Film Library is available for accredited professionals only and is open for one (1) month, March 2023.


Any such cases not mentioned in these regulations will be left to the festival’s consideration (in accordance with FIAPF International Regulations). By submitting the entry form the submitter acknowledges that they have read, understood and accepted the regulations without reservation.
